montessori educational philosophy
Maria Montessori, born in Italy in 1870, was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome Medical School. She approached education as a scientist using observation and study to guide her. She identified planes of development in life and adapted the focus of each level of education to meet the needs of each of the planes. She also identified and wrote about sensitive periods, the absorbent mind, the importance of a prepared environment and repetition and identified nine key elements that make up authentic Montessori programs.

The common philosophy and approach among Montessori schools, even though they may look different, provides for: an educational model that is replicable, one that can be adapted to new situations, can include educational innovations based on new research, and is sustainable.

Key Elements of an Authentic Montessori Program
1) Teachers or guides trained in the curriculum and philosophy
2) Full compliment of Montessori materials
3) Three year age span in the classrooms
4) Children working at their own pace
5) Lessons based on teacher observation
6) Freedom of choice within structure
7) Emphasis on respect and the classroom as a community
8) Appreciation of the development of concentration
9) “Never do for the child what he can do for himself.” ~ Dr. Montessori
